Practical Engineering: Reference Harness Implementation & Production Anatomy

Enterprise & Authority • 8-12 min read • Reference Standard

Abstract:
Moving from theoretical taxonomy to production authority requires deep practical fluency in harness source code. This article provides a production-grade reference implementation of an H2/H3 Agent Harness adhering to the ETCLOVG framework. It then conducts a deep source-code anatomy of four leading production harnesses: Anthropic's Claude Code & Claude Agent SDK, OpenAI's Codex App Server, All-Hands AI's OpenHands, and LangGraph / Deep Agents StateGraph patterns. Finally, it outlines the progressive enrichment pipeline from a Minimum-Viable Harness (MVH) to an industrial Software Factory.

1. Production Reference Implementation: The ETCLOVG Architecture

Below is a complete, modular reference architecture in Python demonstrating how the seven layers of ETCLOVG integrate into a cohesive runtime substrate:

2. Production Source Anatomy: Leading Harnesses

1. Claude Code & Claude Agent SDK (Anthropic)

  • Architectural Archetype: Local CLI-Native Supervised Harness.
  • Core Mechanisms:
  • Interactive Streaming Interceptor: Parses model tool-use blocks token-by-token. If the model invokes a shell command, the harness intercepts before execution and evaluates security permissions.
  • Windowed File Navigation: Instead of loading full source files, the SDK enforces view_file with explicit StartLine and EndLine slices, preserving the optimal 32k–64k reasoning zone.
  • Pager Overrides: Injects PAGER=cat and CI=true across all child sub-processes to prevent hanging on interactive terminal prompts.

2. OpenAI Codex App Server

  • Architectural Archetype: Client-Server Remote Execution Substrate.
  • Core Mechanisms:
  • Decoupled Architecture: The reasoning model runs on central infrastructure while code executes inside ephemeral remote Linux micro-containers.
  • AST Gatekeeper: Merges to the repository trunk are blocked by custom AST linters running inside the remote harness. If code introduces circular dependencies or exceeds complexity ceilings, the remote server rejects the pull request automatically.

3. OpenHands (All-Hands AI)

  • Architectural Archetype: Event-Stream Sandboxed Generalist.
  • Core Mechanisms:
  • Append-Only Event Bus: Model thoughts, tool requests, environment observations, and user messages are written to an immutable event log.
  • Docker-Based Workspace Sandboxing: Every task runs inside a clean container with mounted workspace volumes, network throttling, and automated state checkpointing.

4. LangGraph / Deep Agents (StateGraph)

  • Architectural Archetype: Cyclic Graph-State Machine.
  • Core Mechanisms:
  • Explicit Graph Topologies: Agent workflows are modeled as nodes (Model, Tool, Validator) connected by conditional edges.
  • Persistent Checkpointing: Every state transition is written to an external persistence store (PostgreSQL / SQLite), allowing human engineers to pause, inspect, rewind, and resume multi-hour tasks without losing execution state.

3. Skills Registries: Dynamic Capability Extension

In an enterprise harness, exposing 50 tools simultaneously overwhelms the model's tool-selection attention. Production harnesses implement Skills Registries:

                       SKILLS REGISTRY DISCOVERY PIPELINE

   Task Objective ──► ┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
                      │ SKILLS REGISTRY GATEWAY │
                      │ • Evaluates task semantic similarity │
                      │ • Dynamically binds 2-4 relevant skills │
                      └──────────────────────────┬─────────────────────────────┘
                                                 │
                                                 ▼ Injected Tools
                                 ┌───────────────────────────────┐
                                 │ ACTIVE MODEL RUN │
                                 │ • Core Tools (Read, Edit, Bash│
                                 │ • Bound Skills (e.g., Docker, │
                                 │ Kubernetes, Database-Admin) │
                                 └───────────────────────────────┘
  • Progressive Discovery: Tools are partitioned into modular namespaces (e.g., git-tools, db-migrate-tools, aws-infra-tools).
  • Just-in-Time Context Injection: Only the schemas and system instructions for active tools are injected into the context window, conserving tokens and preventing tool hallucinations.
